Lambi hut - winter trips

Lambi hut - winter trips

In winter the walking route up Glerárdalur valley to Lambi hut (11 km) is frequently covered by deep and difficult snow. When travelling on foot it is normally necessary to have either touring skis or snowshoes. If there is little snow, crampons for the walking boots are strongly advisable.

In winter it is best to follow the summer walking route which is marked by yellow sticks. The route starts at the car park at Heimari-Hlífá river and follows at first the eastern rim of the gorge of river Glerá. Then the route turns away from the river to the slope of the valley. After some 6 km the route goes down toward the river Glerá and to a pedestrian bridge across the small river Fremri-Lambá (GPS: 65°36’15.7“N – 18°15’35.4“W), some 100 m above the junction of river Fremri-Lambá and river Glerá. From the bridge across Fremri-Lambá the route follows the yellow sticks for a further 4 km to the Lambi hut (GPS: 65°34’52.04“N – 18°17’44.69“W).

In the winter there is normally no access to running water at the hut. Snow must therefore be melted for drinking water. When leaving the hut, make absolutely sure to turn off all lights and shut all windows in the hut. Also, make sure that the double main door is securely closed, see instructions on the door.

Winter visitors should realize that the weather conditions up in Glerárdalur valley can be ferocious although the weather in Akureyri town is quite gentle. If you plan to walk up to Lambi hut in the dark winter months (November – February), is is important to set off early in the day because it can be very difficult to find the hut after darkness falls.

Have a safe and pleasant journey,
